Chapter 1: My husband bought me a trip to paris. h007

I knelt before the mechanical dial.

I spun the brass ring: *Left fifty-six. Right fourteen. Left forty-four. Right ten.*

The internal deadbolts shot back with a heavy, pneumatic thud: *THUNK.*

I reached inside the darkness.

I did not pull out stock certificates or jewelry.

I pulled out a four-inch, solid-titanium surveyor’s compass transit key, stepped with fifty-six analog cryptographic notches along its lower edge, stamped with the raised red-wax dry seal of the **DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY // SPECIAL ADMIRALTY CHANCERY**:

`KEY IDENTIFIER: MERCER-ARTHUR-1944-010`

`CLASSIFICATION: STRATEGIC SOVEREIGN ESCROW // TITLE 50 CONTINUITY`

`TITLE: CONDUIT TEN // THE CAPITAL COMMAND SPUR`

Beneath the keyway lay an encrypted military satellite transceiver terminal—a hardened, thermal-nuclear-shielded communicator operating on an independent, military-grade carrier wave: the **Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) Admiralty Frequency**.

I picked up the terminal. I flipped the heavy brass toggle switch: *CLACK.*

The digital display flared to life in brilliant, unyielding emerald phosphor:

`JSOC ADMIRALTY RELAY // SECURE CARRIER LOCK`

`AUTHENTICATING: CHANCELLOR CLARA ELEANOR MERCER`

`COMMISSION: MASTER TRUSTEE, THE 1944 MERCER SOVEREIGN CHARTER`

`EMERGENCY TELEMETRY: ACTIVE // BEACON LOCKED`

`LOCATION: GREENWICH MANOR // POST ROAD SECTOR`

I pressed the single pre-programmed red emergency button:

*hummm… hummm.*

On the second pulse, a deep, gravelly baritone—a voice that had commanded carrier strike groups across four oceans, the voice of my late grandfather Arthur’s younger brother, **Vice Admiral David Mercer**, Chief of Naval Operations and Surgeon General Emeritus of the United States Navy—exploded across the encrypted terminal:

*“Admiral Mercer on deck! Clara! Your emergency locator beacon just flared on the naval command grid in Greenwich! Report your tactical status!”*

“Uncle David,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice dropping forty decibels of compressed, sub-zero polar diamond:

“The domestic perimeter is compromised.”

“My husband, Eric Vance, has just executed a fraudulent, forged one-point-two-five-million-dollar collateral mortgage against my grandmother’s home on behalf of **The Valkyrie Trust of Zurich**.”

“He has systematically drained four hundred and eighty thousand dollars from my secondary accounts over the last twenty-four months, routing the capital through Vaduz.”

“He believes I am currently aboard Air France Flight zero-zero-seven en route to Paris.”

I took a slow, deep breath, looking down at the four-inch titanium keyway in my palm:

“And Eric confirmed on audio recording that his partner, former **Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance**, is moving a heavy commercial demolition convoy toward the timber gates of Blackwood Ridge right now.”

A sharp, violent intake of breath hissed across the secure line eighty miles away:

*“Those arrogant, seditious thieves,”* Admiral David Mercer roared, his voice vibrating with lethal, unyielding naval fury that made the library windowpanes rattle:

*“Arthur Sterling-Vance sent his private factoring brokers to dispossess my brother Arthur’s living granddaughter?!”*

Admiral Mercer’s voice dropped into pure, diamond-hard resolve:

*“Task Force Caduceus is already airborne over Long Island Sound, Chancellor.”*

*“The United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group, DEVGRU Red Squadron, and the naval tactical flight stack out of Groton are locking the Greenwich airspace right now.”*

*“Where is Eric Vance?”*

“He is en route to the First Fidelity Bank branch on Greenwich Avenue to file a fraudulent signature revocation against my liquid accounts,” I answered.

*“Hold your position on the front portico, Clara.”*

*“We are going to audit that bank branch into dust.”*

*“The fleet is on deck.”*

Before I could reply…

Outside the front leaded-glass windows…

*SCREEECH-CRUNCH.*

The high-performance tires of Eric’s black BMW sedan slid to an aggressive, skidding halt in the driveway turnaround!

The driver’s door flew open.

Eric Vance stepped out into the damp mist, his silk tie loosened, his face twisted into an ugly, panicked, sweaty grimace, clutching an emergency bank alert printout in his trembling right hand:

“CLARA?!” Eric’s voice screamed through the front portico:

**“WHERE ARE YOU?! WHY DID THE AIRLINE LOGISTICS DESK JUST NOTIFY MY OFFICE THAT YOU NEVER BOARDED THE PLANE?!”**
