Chapter 1: My husband bought me a trip to paris. h007

My daughter.

Alive.

Growing strong upon solid rock.

And across the hairline above little Eleanor’s left ear, curving down toward her temple in an unmistakable crescent, was the dark wine-red vascular mark of her heritage: a port-wine stain shaped like half an antique surveying transit plumb.

The mark of Arthur Mercer Senior.

The mark of the bedrock.

Eleanor ran straight to my chair, climbing into my lap, setting her toy brass surveying plumb on the chestnut table, throwing her strong, loving little arms around my neck:

“Mommy!” Eleanor laughed into the morning breeze, pressing her soft, warm cheek against mine:

“Plumb level!”

“Good doggie!”

“The bad people are in their cages!”

“We are home, Mommy!”

Barnaby thumped his golden tail against the deck: *thump.*

I reached down, holding my brave, beautiful daughter against my chest while Garrett, Thomas, and Uncle David stood beside us, feeling our steady, healthy hearts beating in unyielding, sovereign harmony:

“Nobody is ever stealing our home again, my sweet angel,” Chancellor Clara Eleanor Mercer replied:

“The house is clean.”

“The recording was made.”

“The uniform held true.”

“The line holds true.”

Mounted in solid teak on the cedar wall of the pavilion behind our rocking chairs…

Beneath a clean pane of museum-grade non-reflective glass…

Was the Four-Inch Solid-Titanium Transponder Key.

Beside it, resting inside a velvet-lined rosewood shadowbox, was the broken gold nib of Chief Justice Arthur Vance’s Montblanc fountain pen.

And beside the pen, preserved in a miniature bronze frame…

Was that single, recovered boarding pass for Air France Flight 007, stamped *VOYD AB INITIO // COVENANT REDEEMED*, resting alongside Arthur Mercer Senior’s original handwritten 1944 sovereign survey patent:

`THE MERCER HOMESTEAD // PARCEL 10`

`ACREAGE: 40 MILES OF SUBTERRANEAN BEDROCK`

`STATUS: SOVEREIGN & UN-ENCUMBERED`

`HELD IN TRUST FOR THE LINEAL HEIRS // AD INFINITUM`

`INSCRIPTION: BUILT PLUMB. HELD TRUE.`

`BALANCE DUE: ZERO.`

And resting on a pedestal of hand-carved Virginia greenstone beside the garden gate…

Polished until the small robin’s-egg blue box gleamed beneath the morning sun…

Was That Very Blue Tiffany Box Eric Had Left Beside My Morning Coffee.

Its silk ribbon encased in clear crystal resin, a bronze plaque mounted across the pedestal reading:

`MY HUSBAND BOUGHT ME A TRIP TO PARIS TO STEAL MY HOME.`

`A FORENSIC AUDITOR’S SILENCE RAISED THE BEDROCK OF THE REPUBLIC.`

`BUILT PLUMB. HELD TRUE.`

A pair of white-tailed sea hawks broke from the high canopy of the northern pines along the shore, circling high on the thermal updrafts above the water, their broad wings catching the sun as they banked clean, deep, and free across the limitless blue American sky.

I looked down at the hand-carved inscription on the arm of the cedar rocking chair beside my knee:

`BUILT PLUMB. HELD TRUE.`

`MERCER HOMESTEAD // ESTABLISHED 1944`

A slow, radiant, permanent smile broke across Clara Mercer’s face—a smile that held zero fear, zero debts, zero lies, and zero graves.

I looked out over the forty miles of clean, sweet river water where my grandfather’s memory, my uniform’s honor, and my daughter’s true future had finally taken root upon solid rock:

“The line is plumb, Grandpa Arthur,” Clara whispered into the morning breeze:

“The doors are locked from the inside.”

“The foundation stands upon solid stone.”

“The thieves are in their cages.”

“Eleanor is laughing.”

“Garrett is home.”

“The uniform held true.”

“The ledger is closed.”

“And around here…”
