His eyes were wide, the pupils dilated until the pale blue of his irises was swallowed by black.
His silk tie hung crooked against his spread collar, his breathing coming in dry, shallow, uncoordinated clicks:
*k-k-k.*
“Amelia…?”
Preston stammered, his fingers clawing at the edge of his mahogany table: “What… what is that pin?
You… you were an administrative paralegal!
You told my parents you worked in civilian records at Fort Lee before we met in Richmond!”
“I told you what Task Force Archangel cleared for your civilian security clearance, Preston,” Captain Amelia Carter-Mercer answered softly.
I stepped out from behind the petitioner’s table.
My hand-welted leather field boots made a clean, concussive *tack… tack… tack* against the linoleum:
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
*TACK.*
Every step fell with the mechanical, heavy cadence of a naval battery firing across an enclosed harbor.
I stopped at the center of the bar, three feet from Martin Voss, looking straight past the defense table into Arthur Hale’s pale, sweat-slicked face:
“My legal maiden name is not Carter,” I spoke, my voice echoing off the thirty-foot ceiling:
“I am **Captain Amelia Margaret Mercer**.”
“Direct biological granddaughter of **Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior**—the naval civil engineer who, in nineteen-forty-four, under Title 50 War Powers, was commissioned by the Department of the Navy to bore forty miles of subterranean pre-Cambrian crystalline schist beneath North America!”
“He built **Conduit Ten**.”
“The classified, electromagnetic-shielded, pressurized analog command artery running eighty feet beneath this continent, connecting the deep naval command redoubts at Great Lakes and Norfolk straight into the nuclear retaliatory continuity crypts beneath the Supreme Court of the United States!”
“Inside that conduit were placed forty-eight titanium transit cylinders containing the physical, analog mechanical targeting release matrices for our nation’s strategic nuclear deterrent.”
“No digital hack could touch them.”
“No foreign satellite could override them.”
“They are physical, un-hackable, eternal.”
I pointed my bare right index finger straight through the southern windows of the courtroom toward the James River basin:
“And the eight-hundred-acre estate on Blackthorn Ridgeway in Goochland County where Preston and I lived for seven years—the property where your family hosted their private political fundraisers and told me to supervise the catering staff…?”
I paused, letting the silence crush the room:
“…is not family real estate.”
“It sits directly atop **Valve Station Ten // Virginia Fall Line Subterranean Aperture**!”
“The primary surface ventilation manifold, cryogenic emergency staging terminal, and master pneumatic override hatch for forty miles of classified defense bedrock running eighty feet beneath that very dining room where you left those divorce papers beside my tea!”
Arthur Hale rose from the gallery pew like a dead man hoisted by cables.
His hands gripped the wooden railing so hard that his knuckles looked like white bone:
“You’re insane!”
Arthur roared, spit flying from his lips onto the spectator partition: “That land was purchased through the Virginia Land Development Trust in nineteen-eighty-four!
We own the fee-simple title!
We hold the deeds in our family vault in Richmond!”
“You hold a fraudulent secondary factoring lease, Arthur,” I answered coldly:
“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**:”
“The underlying fee-simple title to forty miles of defense bedrock belongs exclusively to Arthur Mercer’s direct biological descendants who hold active master chancery commissions.”
“Unto me.”
“And through my blood… held in sacred trust for the Republic in perpetuity!”
Martin Voss scrambled to unbutton his briefcase, pulling out a thick sheaf of blue-backed contracts:
“Your Honor!
Even if this historical federal easement exists, the prenuptial agreement signed by this woman in twenty-nineteen completely waives all rights to real property, commercial equity, and corporate holdings acquired by Preston Hale or the Hale Family Trust prior to or during the marriage!
She signed away every inch of Goochland County for a one-time severance of fifty thousand dollars!”
Vance’s hand shook as he thrust the document toward the bench:
“The waiver is absolute!
It was witnessed, notarized, and registered!”
“Read Clause Fourteen of your own prenuptial agreement, Mr.
Voss,” I said softly.
The courtroom seemed to drop ten degrees in half a second.
Martin Voss’s eyes flicked to the blue-backed agreement in his hands.
His fingers fumbled across the seventh page, tracing the tight, eight-point legal font at the bottom margin:
`PARAGRAPH 14 // FIDUCIARY INTERLOCK & JURISDICTIONAL CONTINGENCY:`
`”IN THE EVENT THAT THE SPOUSAL HOMESTEAD SITS ATOP AN UN-DISCLOSED”`
`”FEDERAL CONTINUITY EASEMENT UNDER TITLE 50 WAR POWERS,”`
`”AND THE PETITIONING SPOUSE INITIATES AN ADVERSE DIVORCE PROCEEDING”`
`”WITHOUT CERTIFYING PRIOR SETTLEMENT OF THE UNDERLYING SOVEREIGN CHARTER,”`
`”ALL MARITAL SEVERANCE LIMITATIONS ARE NULL AND VOID AB INITIO…”`
Voss’s voice stopped.
His jaw hung slack, his throat working in dry, spastic, uncoordinated clicks:
*k-k-k.*
“…and the entire estate of the petitioner…”
Voss whispered, the words coming out as a shredded, paper-thin rasp: “…including all corporate factoring assets, private securities, and collateral lines… forfeits automatically under the doctrine of *In Flagrante Treason* to the registered sovereign custodian.”
Preston leaped out of his chair, lunging toward Voss, grabbing his attorney by the lapels:
“Martin!
What did you just read?!
What did she write into that agreement?!
