CHAPTER 1: My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer L007

David’s expression softened.

“She cried.”

Ethan looked up quickly.

“Because she’s mad?”

“No.”

David’s voice broke.

“Because she thought we were going to lose the house.”

Silence.

I stared.

“What?”

David looked toward the window.

“We aren’t.”

Then corrected himself.

“Not immediately.”

That wasn’t the same thing.

He continued.

“Our mortgage is behind two months. We have medical debt. My wife’s car needs repairs. We’ve been trying to keep all of
it away from Lily.”

I looked at Ethan.

He had known.

Somehow.

“How did you find out?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Lily heard her parents arguing.”

David winced.

“She told him?”

“Not everything.”

Ethan said quietly:

“She said her dad was selling his truck.”

David looked at him.

Then laughed once.

Not humor.

“I listed it three weeks ago.”

Ethan continued:

“And she said she was going to ask if she could stop treatment for a while.”
