CHAPTER 1: My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer L007

Everything.

“That computer?”

He nodded.

“Why?”

He glanced at David.

Then at the floor.

“To help Lily.”

I was still confused.

“The wig was already paid for.”

“It wasn’t for the wig.”

David leaned back and closed his eyes.

Mr. Harrison quietly left the office.

Apparently he understood this had stopped being a school matter.

I sat beside Ethan.

“What was it for?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Her treatment.”

My heart stopped.

“What treatment?”

David answered this time.

“Not treatment exactly.”

I turned toward him.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“Transportation.

Hotel nights. Food. Parking. Things insurance doesn’t cover.”

I stared.

Lily’s treatment required frequent trips to a children’s hospital nearly two hours away.

I’d known that.

What I had not known was how much those trips were costing them.

David continued.

“My wife had to cut her work hours. I’ve used nearly all my paid leave.”
