Then Lily surprised Ethan.
After dinner, she brought out a small frame.
Inside was not the wig.
A photograph.
Fourteen-year-old Ethan.
Long hair.
Looking furious at a haircut appointment.
Beside him, Lily bald and grinning.
Underneath, one sentence:
You did not save my life. You made part of it less lonely.
Ethan stared.
Then cried.
Everyone nearby pretended not to notice.
Lily hugged him.
“That
okay?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
There it was.
The sentence that finally put the whole story in proportion.
Not saved.
Less lonely.
Sometimes that is the highest form of help available.
I kept thinking about the principal’s office.
David’s opening question.
You have no idea what your son has done, do you?
At the time it sounded ominous.
Then heroic.
Later complicated.
Eventually I understood the question should have been different.
Do you know what your son believes he is responsible for?
That was what we had missed.
