CHAPTER 1: My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer L007

Every morning.

No fundraising link.

No speeches.

Backpack.

Sidewalk.

Silence when she wanted it.

Jokes when she didn’t.

The school had problems too.

Mr. Harrison learned that students had been teasing Ethan during the

months he grew his hair.

I already knew some.

Not all.

One boy had called him “Lily’s girlfriend.”

Another had pulled his hair from behind.

A teacher had once told him:

“You’d look more appropriate with a normal haircut.”

That one infuriated me.

Ethan had never told me.

Why?

Because he worried I’d intervene and Lily would feel responsible.

Again.

He had begun organizing his life around protecting her from other people’s feelings.

Too much.

The school addressed it.

Not a giant assembly turning Ethan into a hero.

He begged

them not to.

Instead:

Policy enforcement.

Staff conversation.

Clear bullying response.

Quiet.

Better.

Then the television station called again.

This time they wanted both kids.
