Chapter 1: I was pregnant with our fifth child when I learned that my husband had fallen in love with my younger sister. h007

I stood up from the floor, my popcorn bowl tipping over:

“She did what?!”

“Reverend Aldridge was at the vows, Annie! Ryan had just reached for the rings! Amelia walked straight out of the family pew, marched down the center aisle, climbed the altar steps, and grabbed the wireless microphone from the lectern!”

“Sarah, what is she doing?!” I cried, grabbing my car keys from the hook:

“Annie, she looked directly into Ryan’s face, then turned around to face the entire congregation,” Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with pure, unadulterated shock:

“She pulled a heavy, sealed blue vellum envelope out of her velvet coat pocket… and told two hundred guests that she had a public message from the Chief of Naval Operations before this ceremony could continue!”

My hand froze around my car keys.

The air in my kitchen turned to liquid nitrogen.

*The blue vellum envelope.*

My late grandfather, **Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior**, had left four sealed envelopes in the family safe thirty years ago.

I had never opened them.

And my nine-year-old daughter had just carried one onto the altar of her father’s
wedding.

The tires of my Buick LeSabre screamed against the wet asphalt of Route Fifty as I rounded the winding mountain turns toward Middleburg, Virginia.

The rain had begun to fall again—a dense, biting autumn sleet that hammered against my windshield like handfuls of coarse gravel. My hands gripped the steering wheel at ten and two, my knuckles white, my phone resting on the dashboard on speakerphone while Sarah’s frantic voice cut through the static of the mountain cell towers:

“Annie! Are you on Fifty yet?! The chapel is in complete, total pandemonium! Ryan’s business partners from Zurich are standing up in the pews! Uncle Richard tried to walk up the altar steps to pull Amelia away from the microphone, and Reverend Aldridge put his arm out and blocked him!”
