Chapter 1: I was pregnant with our fifth child when I learned that my husband had fallen in love with my younger sister. h007

The silence that clamped down over the historic sanctuary of Oakridge was so dense, so absolute, that the rhythmic *tack… tack… tack* of the antique 1956 Admiralty Gold Chronometer on Vice Admiral David Mercer’s wrist sounded like a mechanical detonator counting down inside an armored casemate.

Ryan Vance did not maintain his aristocratic posture.

His six-foot frame gave a violent, spastic shudder, his knees slipping on the carpet as he caught the lower rail with both hands to keep from tumbling face-first into the pulverized glass:

*rattle-clank.*

His capillaries had collapsed inward in an instant, structural failure that left his tanned, sculpted features the exact, mottled shade of curdled skim milk:

*k-k-k.*

His breath hitched in dry, spastic, uncoordinated convulsions as his eyes darted frantically from the four-star Admiral standing on the altar steps, to the twelve tactical DEVGRU operators whose crimson infrared laser needles cut through the drifting dust to burn unblinkingly against his chest, to the nine-year-old daughter who stood beside the military working dog holding the charter of his ruin.

Beside him, Chloe’s knees gave way completely.

Her twelve-foot cathedral veil caught on the communion balustrade, tearing with a sharp, sickening sound of ripping silk: *screeech-rip.*

Her four-inch designer bridal heels slipped on the marble, dropping her onto her shins in the middle of the chancel, her French lace gown tearing along the side seam as she clawed frantically at the wood:

*thud-clatter.*

Her breath whistled past her bloodless lips in rapid, spastic micro-tremors:

*tick-tick-tick-tick.*

“A-Admiral… Mercer…?! Four… four stars…?! Chief of Naval Operations…?!” Ryan wheezed, his voice reduced to a thin, shredded rattle from the bottom of an open grave:

“David! What… what kind of sick, theatrical ambush is this?! Why are there armed naval commandos inside my wedding ceremony?! This is a private religious service!”

Vice Admiral David Mercer did not look at Ryan with anger.
