“Did you tell me Sophie didn’t want to come because you knew I’d disagree
with your decision?”
Amanda hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“I knew you’d think I was being unreasonable.”
“Because you were.”
She wiped her face.
“Everyone has been commenting on my dress, my hair, and the decorations. I’ve spent months worrying about how everything will look. I wanted the photographs to be perfect.”
Travis’ voice softened, but his expression remained serious.
“And you decided Sophie was something that needed fixing?”
“No. I didn’t mean it that way.”
“But that’s what you did.”
Amanda looked at me desperately.
“Brittany, I know this sounds awful.”
“It doesn’t just sound awful.”
I opened the final page.
There was a photograph of Sophie’s pink dress lying neatly across her bed.
Beside it sat a handmade card decorated with flowers.
Inside, Sophie had drawn Amanda wearing a wedding gown.
