Why Early Recognition Matters
Recognizing symptoms early can help people obtain treatment, reduce the risk of
complications, and lower the likelihood of passing an infection to someone else. Untreated STIs can sometimes lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, fertility problems, complications during pregnancy, damage to certain organs, or an increased risk of acquiring or transmitting other infections.
However, early recognition does not always mean noticing a visible symptom. Because many STIs are asymptomatic, a person may feel completely healthy and still have an infection. Testing is particularly important after a possible exposure, when a sexual partner has been diagnosed with an STI, or when a healthcare professional recommends screening based on individual circumstances.
Feeling well is not proof that no infection is present. Equally, experiencing a symptom does not prove that an STI is responsible. The safest approach combines awareness, testing, and professional medical advice.
