At two in the morning, after finishing a grueling twelve-hour emergency room shift, I spotted a young woman sitting outside the hospital with two newborn babies.

He pointed at the document.

I read it again.

Nathan was my older brother.

The same brother I hadn’t spoken to in ten years.

Suddenly, everything became clear.

I had unknowingly helped my estranged brother’s wife and newborn sons.

And rather than take responsibility for abandoning them, he’d decided to make trouble for me at work.

I left Richard’s office stunned.

There was only one person I needed to see.

My mother. Birthdayparty planning

Barbara lived twenty minutes away.

When she opened her front door, she smiled warmly.

“Daniel! What a lovely surprise!”

Her expression changed when she saw my face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Mom, someone filed a complaint against me at the hospital.”

“Who?”

“Nathan.”

She stared at me.

“Your brother? What happened?”

“Apparently, helping his wife and newborn twins was a terrible mistake.”

Her eyes widened.

“Wait. You met Emily?”

“Two nights ago. Completely by accident.”
