At two in the morning, after finishing a grueling twelve-hour emergency room shift, I spotted a young woman sitting outside the hospital with two newborn babies.

I stared at her.

“He left you here with two six-day-old babies?”

She nodded.

“I don’t even want to go home. I just need to get to my sister’s house.”

“Can your sister pick you up?”

“I can’t call her. Nathan took my phone.”

I handed her mine.

“Here. Call her.”

Her sister, Sophie, answered immediately.

“Emily? Is everything alright?”

“Nathan left me at the hospital. Can you please come get us?”

Unfortunately, Sophie’s car was being repaired.

She suggested a taxi, but Emily didn’t have any money.

When the call ended, Emily lowered her head.

“I don’t know what to do.”

I glanced at the two tiny babies.

“I can drive you.”

She hesitated.

“But I don’t know you.”

“That’s completely understandable.”

I showed her my hospital identification badge.

“And if you’re worried, the security cameras have probably recorded my terrible haircut from every possible angle.”
