At dinner, my brother sneered, ‘still single, huh? must be lonely being a failure.’ my parents chuckled – so i smiled and said, ‘funny coming from a guy whose rent i’ve paid for 3 years. not anymore, by the way.’

My phone buzzed.

An email from my father.

The subject line read:

Family Dinner.

I opened it.

He had invited everyone to dinner the following Sunday. He said my mother wanted us all together again. He said Connor was willing to come if I could promise not to bring up the past.

I read that sentence several times.

If I could promise not to bring up the past.

The past that included years of financial support, stolen work, lies, humiliation, and a family that had expected me to remain silent.

I closed the email.

Then I wrote a short reply.

Thank you for inviting me. I won’t be attending. I wish everyone well, but I’m no longer willing to pretend that everything is fine just because we share the same last name.

I pressed send.

And for the first time, I didn’t wait for a response.

I went inside, made myself dinner, and sat by the window overlooking the city.
