At dinner, my brother sneered, ‘still single, huh? must be lonely being a failure.’ my parents chuckled – so i smiled and said, ‘funny coming from a guy whose rent i’ve paid for 3 years. not anymore, by the way.’

Olivia slowly pulled her hand away.

“Then why is his name on everything?”

Connor looked around desperately.

“Because he’s my brother! We shared ideas!”

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Did you lie to me about your career?”

He didn’t answer.

She looked down at her wedding ring.

Then she quietly removed it.

“I don’t know who I just married.”

She placed the ring on the nearest table and walked away.

The ballroom remained silent as she disappeared through the side doors with her maid of honor.

Connor shouted her name, but she didn’t turn around.

I watched him stand there, surrounded by people who had applauded him only minutes earlier.

For once, nobody rushed to comfort him.
