And his warning that everyone would have a problem referred to the family argument that had happened shortly before Robert’s death.
Jake believed I might remember something about that night.
And suddenly, I did.
A few weeks before he died, Robert had sat beside my bed and said,
“Margaret, promise me you’ll never let our children decide where you’re going to live.”
At the time, I thought he was simply afraid of leaving me alone.
Now those words had an entirely different meaning.
Sarah began crying.
She
confessed that David was in serious financial trouble. His company was nearly bankrupt, his debts were piling up, and he had convinced his sister that selling the house was their only solution.
“We thought you’d be better off in a care facility,” Sarah said.
I looked at her.
“Did either of you ever ask me what I wanted?”
She didn’t answer.
I turned toward the attorney sitting in my living room.
He confirmed that he was.
“Then this conversation is over. I’ll be contacting my own attorney.”
That day, Sarah
left without hugging me.
Jake also prepared to leave.
I stopped him.
“Tell me one more thing. Where is your mother now?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“On the other side of town. She was afraid to see you for a long time. She thought you blamed her.”
The following day, I met Linda.
We held each other and cried for a long time.
She told me Robert had never accused her of stealing. My children had simply tried to get rid of her because she had overheard too much.
She also admitted that she had asked Jake to help me, but she hadn’t realized how far her son’s deception had gone.
Over the following weeks, I worked with an independent attorney to review my property documents. An independent medical evaluation found no grounds to declare me incapable of managing my own affairs.
My children’s plan failed.
David eventually came to apologize.
I told him that I could love my son without allowing him to control my life.
Rebuilding my relationship with Sarah took longer.
As for Jake, he moved
out of my house.
I was the one who asked him to leave.
As grateful as I was, I couldn’t continue a relationship that had begun with a lie.
Three months later, Jake and Linda came to visit me.
We sat in the backyard, drank coffee, and talked for hours.
That day, Jake said something I’ll never forget.
