PART 10
My mother blamed herself.
That was almost inevitable.
“I should have noticed.”
“No.”
“I gave him passwords.”
“You trusted family.”
“I’m old enough to know better.”
“Mom.”
“I should have called you.”
“You were trying not to bother me.”
She looked down.
“I always thought your marriage was so good.”
“So did I.”
That was the painful truth.
For months after the arrest, I replayed fifteen years.
Had everything been fake?
No.
I refused to believe life worked that simply.
People are rarely one thing forever.
Maybe Julian loved me once.
Maybe he still believed he loved me.
Maybe greed grew slowly.
Maybe the first unauthorized transfer seemed temporary.
Maybe he intended to replace it.
Then the next one became easier.
Then another.
Then Natalie.
Then property.
Then lying.
Then fear of being caught.
Then violence.
Understanding the progression did not excuse it.
It made it more frightening.
Most disasters are not born fully formed.
They are built decision by decision.
