When she reached for a personal item beside the bed, she noticed a small envelope tucked beneath the edge of a folder. Her name was written across the front in Ethan’s familiar handwriting.
She opened it slowly.
The letter was dated several weeks earlier.
Dear Rebecca,
I’ve been struggling to explain what I’ve been feeling. I know you want us to be a family, and I know you’ve been looking forward to becoming parents. But I’ve been questioning whether I am ready for the life we’re building. PlanFamily Trips
I keep hoping these doubts will disappear if I ignore them. Instead, I find myself becoming distant, and I know that has hurt you.
I’ve thought about leaving. I haven’t made a final decision, but I don’t want to pretend everything is fine when I don’t know what I want.
You deserve honesty, even if I have been too afraid to give it to you.
Ethan.
Rebecca read the letter twice.
It did not contain the explanation she had hoped to find. It did not excuse his absence or undo the uncertainty surrounding their son’s condition.
But it answered one question she had been asking herself all day.
Ethan’s distance had not begun that morning.
He had been struggling with his doubts long before she entered the hospital, and instead of discussing them openly, he had allowed the silence between them to grow. FindHospitals
Rebecca placed the letter on the bedside table.
She thought about the months she had spent trying to repair their relationship, often assuming that if she became more patient, more understanding, or less demanding, Ethan would eventually meet her halfway.
Now she understood something painful.
She could listen to his fears, but she could not make his decisions for him. She could offer opportunities for honest conversation, but she could not create honesty on his behalf.
And she could love someone without accepting responsibility for every choice that person made.
When Ethan returned to the room, he noticed the envelope beside her.
“You found it,” he said.
“Yes.”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When? Before or after you decided to leave?”
He lowered his eyes.
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca folded the letter and placed it back in the envelope.
“I wish you’d trusted me enough to tell me the truth before everything reached this point.”
“I was afraid of hurting you.”
“You hurt me more by keeping me in the dark.”
He sat down, leaving a respectful distance between them.
“Do you think there’s any chance we can fix this?”
Rebecca looked at him for a long moment.
“Maybe. But not because we’re frightened or because we have a child together. If we ever try again, it has to be because we’re both willing to be honest and do the work. I can’t be the only person trying to hold this marriage together.” FindFamily Lawyer
Ethan nodded slowly.
For once, he did not offer an easy promise.
