After years of learning at home, my 10-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, was finally given the chance to go to a regular school. He was happier than I’d seen him in years. But just five days after he started, I got a phone call from the principal that left me shaken.

Celeste Rowan resigned as PTA president the next morning. She was charged with filing a false report and with theft of the field trip money, and she later accepted a plea agreement with community service and a ban from volunteering at Briar Glen. Brayden returned every phone he’d sold and went through the school’s restorative justice program. Part of it was writing a letter of apology.

He wrote it to Milo.

Milo’s suspension was cleared that Wednesday. The district made the inclusion program permanent in the spring.

EMOTIONAL ENDING
On Milo’s first day back, Ms. Tran’s whole class was waiting at the door when he walked in.

Somebody had made a banner out of printer paper and markers. It said WELCOME BACK MILO with a very lopsided T. rex drawn in the corner. Felix proudly told everyone he had drawn the T. rex. The T. rex was wearing a lab coat.
