After ten years of miscarriages, we finally had our miracle baby girl

And just after midnight she came.

And hearing that noise is the only time in my life I have felt something properly let go.

And they took her over to the warmer to clean her up and do the checks, and the woman doing it was smiling and told us she was perfect.

And a few minutes later she wrapped her up, with one little shoulder still out of the blanket, and carried her over to Saul.

And he had tears all down his face and he put his arms out and took his daughter for the first time.

And I lay back on those pillows waiting for the bit where he looks at her.

And he looked down.

And his face changed.

And the smile went off it, and he went very still, and his breathing went shallow.

And he was looking at a little mark on her shoulder.

And he said: “No. That’s not possible.”

And the shoulder being out of the blanket, which is the only reason any of this happened.

Hetty did that.

She is a midwife and she is about forty and she had been on since eight the previous evening, and she wrapped Marnie and left one shoulder out because the room was warm and because that is what you do when you want a father to get skin on his first hold.

She has no idea. None. She did a small kind thing at about twelve minutes past midnight and then handed a baby over and went to write something up.

And in the January I wrote to that unit to thank them and I named her, and I got a lovely reply.

And I did not say what the shoulder did. I could not work out how to put it in a letter without it sounding like a complaint.

So there is a woman at St Jerome’s who has a nice note from a patient in her file, and who will never know that the way she folded a blanket at midnight ended six years of silence in somebody’s marriage.

And if she had tucked it in, which she would do nine times out of ten, that envelope would still be in a wardrobe with two strips of tape on it and my daughter would still be called her in this house.

What the mark is.
