After Getting Out of Pr*son, I Had Nowhere to Go, So an Elderly Woman Hired Me

I look at the corner of the page.

Two days a week, I drive to Marysville.

Not through the gate I walked out of.

Through the visitor entrance, with a laminated badge that says “Volunteer — Financial Literacy.”

Officer Benning set it up.

She’s a captain now.

She came to the hearing in civilian clothes and sat in the back row and then, three weeks later, called me at Dorothy’s and said, “Cooper, I’ve got forty women in Unit C who can’t read a commissary statement. I’ve got a classroom on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’ve got a pencil. Do you want it?”

I wanted it.

We call it “Reading the Paper.”

Forty women. Two afternoons. A whiteboard and a stack of real statements with the names blacked out.

I teach them what Samuel taught me.

Look at the date field.

Look at the revision code.

Look at who was in the building.
