Dorothy looked at the judge.
“Because I’ve been where she is, Your Honor. Not pr*son. The other part. Where someone you trusted puts their hand in your name and the whole world believes the name instead of the woman.”
“I was sixty-eight when I found out. She was thirty-two.”
“I had Samuel. She had nobody.”
“So I gave her Samuel.”
“That’s all.”
Anita said, “Nothing further.”
The courtroom was very quiet.
Then Anita said, “Your Honor, I have one last exhibit.”
She held up a single sheet of paper in a plastic sleeve.
“This is a letter from Marjorie Foster, the defendant’s late mother-in-law, to her son Brian Foster. It was recovered from a cedar box buried in Mrs. Foster’s garden, where the defendant had also hidden the documents Mr. Ortiz examined.”
“The letter is dated June 29th. Fifteen days after the first transfer. Eleven days before Mrs. Foster’s d*ath.”
