I brought her groceries.
I cleaned when something needed to be done.
I checked on her several times a week.
Sometimes we simply sat and talked.
Other times, I would fix something small around the house or make sure she had everything she needed before I went home.
It wasn’t a burden.
Dorothy had been there for my family when I was growing up.
Helping her felt natural.
That’s why I immediately noticed when something changed.
“I Have Alex Now”
About a month ago, Dorothy suddenly told me I didn’t need to visit as often.
I remember standing in her kitchen when she said it.
“You don’t have to keep coming over,” she told me.
I laughed because I assumed she was joking.
“Why not?”
She smiled.
“I have Alex now.”
I frowned.
“Who is Alex?”
Her expression changed into something almost playful.
“He’s a delivery driver.”
