But I had been looking at everything from the wrong direction.
What I Finally Understood
I had entered Dorothy’s house that afternoon expecting to protect an elderly woman from a young stranger.
Instead, I discovered that Dorothy and Alex had quietly rescued each other.
Dorothy had given Alex something he hadn’t had in years:
A home.
A room.
A place where someone expected him to come back.
And Alex had given Dorothy something she feared losing:
Purpose.
Company.
The feeling that she was still capable of caring for someone else.
Even the basement boxes suddenly made sense.
The supplies weren’t evidence of wrongdoing.
They were proof of kindness.
The young man I had been watching with suspicion was helping an eighty-three-year-old woman repair her house, carry groceries, organize donations and remain connected to the community.
And the eighty-three-year-old woman I thought might be vulnerable had opened her home to a young man who needed somewhere safe to land.
