A few minutes later, he came inside.
I stood in our kitchen.
« Hey, I made lunch, » I said. « It’s on the counter. »
He walked over and picked up a sandwich.
« Everything okay? » I asked, studying his face. « Are things getting better at work? »
He sighed.
« Sarah, we’ve discussed this. »
« I know. I was just wondering. »
« Everything okay? »
« We’re still struggling. »
Then, he added, « Please keep watching what you spend. »
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I waited until he returned to Kevin with the sandwiches.
Then, I called my friend, Megan.
I wanted to scream.
After hearing everything, she asked, « Have you actually seen the business accounts? »
« No. Jacob handles them. »
« Then how do you know he’s telling the truth? »
I didn’t answer.
Megan continued.
« Don’t assume anything yet. Find out what he’s hiding. »
From that evening on, I started paying attention.
« Jacob handles them. »
