A PRIVATE JET WAS WAITING TO TAKE ME TO CHICAGO WHEN MY SEVEN-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHISPERED THAT GRANDMA TOOK HER TO A SECRET PLACE

PART 2

I did not storm the building.

Every instinct screamed at me to — but the thing that stopped me was Fiona.

She wasn’t afraid, out there on the sidewalk.

She ran to the man.

She hugged him around the waist the way she hugs me, the way you hug someone you love and trust, and he knelt and said something that made her laugh, and Wendy stood beside them with an expression I’d never seen on her sharp face:

peace.

Whatever was happening behind that steel door, it was not what my racing mind had built on the drive over.

A child who was being harmed does not run toward the door laughing.

So I did the hardest thing a frightened father can do.

I waited.

I sat in that Range Rover for ninety minutes, and I watched, and nothing sinister happened. No other cars. No other people. Just a windowless building in an industrial district, and my daughter inside it with her grandmother and a dead man.

When they came out, Fiona was carrying a paper — a drawing. She was showing it to the man, and he was nodding seriously, the way you nod at a child’s art when you actually care.

Then Wendy had Fiona lie down in the back seat again — I understood now it was so Fiona genuinely wouldn’t be able to lead anyone back here, a child’s honest “I don’t know where” being safer than a coached lie — and they drove home.

That night, after Fiona was asleep, I did not confront Wendy.

I confronted my wife.

I sat Jessi down and I told her what I’d seen, and I watched my wife of nine years go white, and then gray, and then dissolve into tears I’d only seen from her once before —

eight years ago, at her father’s funeral.

“He’s alive,” I said. “Jessi. Your father is alive. I saw him. Fiona hugged him. Your mother has been taking our daughter to see a man you buried.

I need you to tell me what is happening in my family.

Right now.”

And my wife, crying, said the last thing I expected.

“I know he’s alive, Adrian.

I’ve always known.

I’m the one who helped him disappear.”
