I took out my phone and started the video.
Everyone watched as a white figure approached Owen’s window, raised its hand, then stumbled when the porch light came on.
« She scared him. »
The sheet slipped, revealing Elaine’s unmistakable face.
A neighbor gasped in surprise. « Elaine! You were the ghost? »
I explained that she had scared Owen for three nights because she was afraid of losing the decorating competition.
« He’s ten years old, » I added. « And she frightened him so much that he no longer dared to sleep in his own room. »
Elaine raised her hands to the sky.
She was disqualified.
« It was just a harmless Halloween prank! »
