I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

THE BOY WHO CAME BACK
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The little girl stood beside the red pickup, holding the door with one hand. She looked about five years old, with dark hair, pale cheeks, and eyes that seemed to reach straight through me.

Jesse’s eyes.

I knew those eyes better than I knew my own reflection.

I’d watched them look up at me from a crib, watched them fill with tears when he scraped his knee, and watched them shine when he was sixteen and still believed the world might turn out exactly the way he wanted.

Now I was looking at them again.

On a little girl’s face.

“Danny,” I whispered. “Who is she?”

He swallowed.

“This is Lily.”

The girl took a cautious step forward.

“Are you Mrs. Marlene?”

I nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Danny crouched beside her.

“Remember what I told you?”

She nodded and looked at me.
