Part 1: The Whisper in the Living Room
“Boys, you tell your mom the whole truth about what you did, or I will tell her myself.”
That was the first thing I heard when I eased the front door shut behind me on Tuesday, at 2:40 in the afternoon. My last client at the dental office where I do billing had canceled, and I’d driven home early with a rare, silly plan: bake cookies before the twins got out of school.
I stood in the hallway with my keys still in my hand. Kevin’s voice was low and strained, the voice he used when he was trying very hard not to be angry. Then I heard a chair scrape, and somebody sniffled.
Noah and Ethan are fifteen. They don’t sniffle in front of other people.
I stepped into the living room doorway. “What truth? What is going on here?”
