The measuring tape snapped against my chest.
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. I could barely draw enough air into my lungs to make the oxygen monitor beside my bed stop alarming.
Yet I heard every word.
“These windows are enormous,” Jessica said, stretching the yellow measuring tape from one corner to the other. “I think ivory curtains would look beautiful. Something expensive, but not too old-fashioned. This room needs a complete makeover.”
My husband, David, stood behind her with one arm wrapped around her waist.

“Whatever you want, sweetheart. Once she’s gone, this entire house belongs to us.”
Jessica laughed.
“Us?”
David kissed her cheek.
“Of course. You think I’m going to let you live in some little apartment after everything we’ve been through?”
She turned toward my bed.
“Well, I certainly won’t be keeping this furniture. It’s depressing. And that ridiculous medical equipment has to go. I want this room to feel like a luxury hotel.”
