Chapter 1: When eight-year-old Clara proudly presented her school project about her military father …H007

When eight-year-old Clara proudly presented her school project about her military father, her teacher didn’t simply give her a failing grade—she tossed the little girl’s work into the trash in front of twenty-two classmates.

Clara was a quiet third-grader who rarely volunteered to speak in front of the class.

But she had spent days preparing her “Real-Life Hero” assignment, and this time she was excited.

She chose her father, Staff Sergeant Ben Reed, a Marine Corps dog handler, and his military working dog, Scout.

Clara carefully drew Scout, a Belgian Malinois, making sure to include the faint training scar just above his right ear.

She had even interviewed her father during a shaky video call while he was stationed at a field site several hours away.

Ben helped her spell some of the military terms correctly and explained his work in simple language she could understand.

Clara wrote everything down.

But when she stood at the front of Room 3B to present her project, her teacher, Ms.

Harrow, interrupted her.

She picked up Clara’s report and began reading through it.

Within moments, her expression changed.

According to Ms.

Harrow, some of the military terminology sounded far too advanced for an eight-year-old.

She decided Clara couldn’t possibly have written the report herself.

Then she accused the little girl of inventing parts of the story.

“I talked to my dad,” Clara pleaded.

She held out the handwritten notes from their video call.

“He helped me fix some of the words.”

But Ms.

Harrow refused to listen.

She uncapped a red pen.
