My daughter introduced me to her new girlfriend — when she shook my hand, I noticed the tattoo I’d spent 18 years searching for.

My daughter, Emily, had been seeing Claire for four months before she finally brought her home.

I wasn’t worried.

Until Claire shook my hand.

Her sleeve shifted back slightly.

On the inside of her wrist was a small tattoo: three blue stars arranged in a crooked triangle.

I forgot how to breathe.

Eighteen years earlier, my younger sister Rachel had disappeared.

She was twenty-six.

Her car was discovered at a bus station two days later.

Her purse and phone were inside.

Rachel was never found.

The last photo I had of her showed that exact tattoo on her wrist.

Three blue stars.

She’d designed it herself.

“Mom?”

Emily was staring at me.

I managed a smile.

“Sorry.

Long day.”

Claire tugged down her sleeve.

During dinner, I couldn’t stop watching her.

She was twenty-five — too young to be Rachel.

But when I mentioned the tattoo, Claire’s fork froze halfway to her mouth.

“I’ve had it forever.”

“Since when?”

She glanced at Emily.

“I don’t really remember.”

That made no sense.

After dinner, Emily went upstairs to grab something.

Claire and I were alone.

I took out my phone and found Rachel’s old photograph.

“Have you ever seen this woman?”

The color drained from Claire’s face.

“No.”

She answered too quickly.

Then the front door opened.

My husband walked in.

Claire turned toward him.

The grocery bag slipped from his hands.

Oranges rolled across the floor.

My husband went perfectly still.

Not confused.

Terrified.

He stared at Claire as if he’d just seen someone walk in from the de@d.

Claire’s chair scraped against the floor as she stood.

“You.”

One word.

That was all she said.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other?”

Neither answered.

Then my husband did something even stranger.

He walked straight past me and locked the front door.

“Emily!” he called toward the stairs.

“Come down here.”

Claire immediately grabbed her purse.

“I should go.”

“No.”
