MY 4-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER VANISHED PLAYING HIDE-AND-SEEK IN OUR BACKYARD — 10 YEARS LATER, OUR NEW NEIGHBORS INTRODUCED THEIR TEENAGE GIRL, AND ONE LOOK AT HER MADE MY HEART STOP.
“WE KNEW THIS DAY MIGHT COME,” HER MOTHER SAID. “WE’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU, TOO.”
PART 1
My 4-year-old daughter vanished while playing hide-and-seek in our backyard — 10 years later, our new neighbors introduced their teenage girl, and one look at her made my heart stop.
My name is Diane, and ten years ago, an ordinary Saturday became the worst day of my life.
I was making lunch while my husband played with our four-year-old daughter, Margot, in the backyard. Then everything went quiet, and my husband rushed in, terrified. “Margot’s gone.”
They’d been playing hide-and-seek. She was supposed to hide while he counted. When he went looking, she was nowhere.
Police, neighbors, and volunteers searched for months. No one found a single trace of our little girl.
Living in that house became unbearable. We moved away, hoping to keep going. I knew I was supposed to let go, but I never stopped hoping.
Last month, a new family moved in next door. When they introduced themselves on the porch, they called their fourteen-year-old daughter over.
The moment she walked toward me, something shifted. She had Margot’s eyes. The same shape. The same expression.
“Margot?” I whispered.
Her father gently drew her a step behind him. And her mother looked at me and said, “We knew this day might come. We’ve been looking for you, too.”
