Three Days After My Husband Died, His Mother Accused Me of Giving Away His Organs—Then His Doctor Handed Me a Recording He Had Made in Secret
Three days after my husband died, his mother stood in the middle of our kitchen, pointed at my seven-month pregnant belly, and said something I would never forget.

“You got what you wanted, Tessa. You kept his baby, and you gave the rest of my son away.”

I stared at Denise as if she had spoken in another language.

Behind her, a casserole someone from church had brought sat untouched on the counter.

Condolence cards covered our dining table.

Marcus’s jacket was still hanging beside the front door because I hadn’t found the courage to move it.

And my husband’s mother was standing inside the home we had shared for nine years, accusing me of betraying him after his death.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I said, “You need to leave.”

She didn’t.

Not immediately.

She looked at my stomach again.

Then at the framed wedding photo on the wall.

Then back at me.

“You think because you were his wife, you knew everything about him.”

My throat tightened.

“I knew enough to respect what he wanted.”

Her eyes turned cold.

“That’s what you keep saying.”

Before I could answer, someone knocked on the front door.

It was Marcus’s doctor.

And in his hand was a small black case I had never seen before.

He looked at Denise.

Then at me.

“Tessa,” he said quietly, “Marcus asked me to give this to you if anyone ever questioned the decisions he made at the end.”

Denise went completely still.

So did I.

Because suddenly I remembered all those times Marcus had asked me to step out of the hospital room while he spoke privately with his doctor.

I had thought he was protecting me from something.

I had no idea he had been preparing for war.
