My Son Told Me Not to Come to My Grandson’s Birthday Because His Wife’s Family Was “Embarrassed” by Me—He Forgot Who Actually Owned the Mansion
At 1:43 in the morning, my phone lit up on the nightstand.

I almost ignored it.

At sixty-eight, there were very few people in my life who had permission to disturb me after midnight, and my son was one of them.

So when I saw DANIEL on the screen, I assumed something terrible had happened.

Maybe my grandson was sick.

Maybe there had been an accident.

Maybe Daniel needed his mother.

Instead, I opened the message and read something that made me sit completely still in the darkness.

Mom, please don’t come to Noah’s birthday tomorrow.

A second message appeared before I could respond.

Rachel’s mother thinks it would be better if we kept the guest list limited to people from their circle. She says there’s been tension before and she doesn’t want anything awkward happening. Please don’t make this harder than it already is.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Outside my bedroom window, winter rain tapped against the glass.

Inside, I could hear the soft hum of the heating system and the slow ticking of the antique clock on my dresser.

I typed only four words.

I understand. Good night.

Daniel immediately sent back a heart.

That somehow made it worse.

He believed the matter was settled.

He believed his mother would quietly disappear.

What Daniel apparently did not remember was that the enormous stone mansion where his son’s birthday party would take place the following afternoon did not belong to him.
