My husband was showering when my best friend of thirteen years sent him a message that destroyed my marriage.

“I’m downstairs. Is Caroline gone yet?”

For several seconds, I simply stared at the screen.

My husband, Adrian Cole, had left his phone charging beside the kitchen island while he showered after coming home from another late “client dinner.” We had been married for five years, and for almost a year I had been trying to convince myself that his distance was stress rather than deception.

Apparently, I had been working very hard to believe the wrong thing.

My best friend was Vanessa Grant. She had stood beside me at my wedding. She had slept in my guest room after her own divorce. She knew where I kept spare keys, what wine I liked, which side of the bed I slept on, and exactly how frightened I had been when my father died.
