My seventy-two-year-old mother had been on her own for eleven years when she met Harlan, a charming fifty-seven-year-old man from her community gardening club.

Within a few months, I started seeing a version of her I genuinely thought had disappeared along with my father. She bought a red dress she had no practical reason to own. She started wearing perfume again on ordinary Tuesdays. More than once, I caught her smiling at her phone with an expression I hadn’t seen on her since I was a teenager myself.

Harlan seemed wonderful too, at least on paper. He brought her flowers without being asked twice. He fixed her porch railing the same weekend he first noticed it was loose. He was unfailingly kind to my fifteen-year-old daughter, Nadia, remembering small details about her life that most adults forget within a week of hearing them.
